Greetings,
Welcome to the May 2010 ES newsletter.
After nearly six years as CEO of the American
Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter,
I recently accepted an offer to become
President of Mount Aloysius College in
Cresson, Pennsylvania.
It is a terrific school with 1,200
undergraduates and 500 part-time students,
70% of whom are the first in their families
to attend college. I will be succeeding
Sister of Mercy Mary Ann Dillon, who has done
a simply outstanding job in her 13 years at
the helm. Jim Gallagher, who led Philadelphia
University for 25 years, served as President
of Mount Aloysius almost 30 years ago and was
my first connection to this opportunity.
This was a difficult decision, made all the
harder by the inspiring work of our Red Cross
staff and volunteers that I've had the
pleasure of witnessing during my time with
the Chapter.
We'll have plenty of time for goodbyes in the
coming three months as I transition to my new
job. For now, let's focus on the great work
of our Chapter. Just last month, 45 staff and
volunteers responded around the clock to 316
people affected by 69 disasters, providing
them with the emergency assistance they
need.
Thank you for all you do for the American Red
Cross!
All the best,
Tom Foley CEO

Deep in West Virginia: Building a Better World, One Wall at a Time
For a Philadelphian, driving to West Virginia
is tantamount to landing in another world. It
doesn't quite sneak up on you, but it's not
until you get out of the car that you realize
that you're in another place entirely, a
place of innumerable big mountains,
surrounding you so completely that the
feeling of isolation is almost overwhelming.
