Welcome to the December 2009 issue of the
Emergency Services newsletter.
The devastating five-alarm fire at the Austin
Manor Apartments in Northeast Philadelphia
reminded us why we work for the American Red
Cross. Rarely have I seen such despair come
out of a local disaster, and rarely have I
been as inspired by the Red Cross response to
the dozens of clients who needed our
help.
But that fire has not been our only call to
duty. In the month of November, we responded
to 40 emergencies, providing 237 people with
emergency assistance to get them back to
everyday living, trained and certified over
10,000 people in life-saving techniques in
over 600 classes and reached out to almost
200 military families with a crisis at home
and a service member out of the country.
Thank you for all that you do to make our
work possible.
All the best,
Tom Foley CEO

Red Cross Responds to Devastating Northeast Philly Fire
The American Red Cross Southeastern
Pennsylvania (SEPA) Chapter responded to the
emergency needs of dozens of families left
homeless by a devastating fire in Northeast
Philadelphia on Sunday, November 22.

Note from Tom Foley

It was another extraordinary preface to a
holiday period. Last Sunday's fire on the
7000 block of Rising Sun Avenue engaged
dozens of volunteers that day and since, and
the same number of staff as well.

Red Cross Joins Agencies to Test Regional Readiness
The annual Limerick nuclear power plant
response drill was conducted on November 16
2009. This exercise tests readiness in the
event of a radiation release that would
require the evacuation of people around the
affected areas of the plant.

Make the Holidays Brighter for Children Affected by Disaster
Every year, hundreds of children in
Southeastern Pennsylvania are victims of
disasters, such as a tragic house fire or
flood, which leave them without a home or
belongings. To capture the true meaning of
the holiday season, the American Red Cross
SEPA Chapter, together with the Loews
Philadelphia Hotel and ModSpace, will be
hosting its annual holiday party for
families whose lives have been affected by a
disaster during the past year.

Youth Services Shows the Path
The Youth Services program in the Emergency
Services department of the American Red Cross
SEPA chapter has continued to provide
educational services to thousands of students
throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding
counties. During the last couple of months,
we have delivered dozens of trainings, from
Scrubby Bear (hand-washing hygiene) to Fire
Prevention trainings.
